"Hope is a thing with feathers that perches in the soul." - Emily Dickinson

  • Artist Statement

Full of figurative language, this poem is an extended metaphor. In it, Emily Dickinson is transforming hope into a bird (Dickinson is said to have loved birds) that is ever present in the human soul. It sings, especially when times get rough. This tile illuminates that concept, that Hope has feathers and it can, like a bird, perch in the human soul. Not only is Hope feathery, it can sing!
